Day 17: San Francisco

Powell Street, San FranciscoFirst thing we wanted to do today (before checking out the City) was checking in to our room. The Union Square hotel is located in the middle of San Francisco, so we had to drive about 20 minutes from our hotel near the airport to Powell Street in central San Francisco. We already checked out the route yesterday, so found the hotel in no-time.
The hotel had a garage in the back so we parked the car there. It appeared to cost $17 for one night. Ouch!! I thought parking in the Netherlands was expensive.

Our room looked great and we all thought the high price of the hotel was well worth it. The best thing is the location of the hotel, just in the center of San Francisco.

Today we planned a walking tour. I found a "tour plan" in the AAA-Tour book and the start of the tour appeared to be right across the street.
The weather was very nice, nothing like we thought it would be. We always heard the weather in San Francisco was not very good. I still remember Clint Eastwood (in Escape from Alcatraz) saying something like: " this summer in San Francisco was the worst winter we ever had".

Because of the Easter holidays most shops were closed, except the tourist shops. We saw a lot of shops selling electronic stuff for quite low prices.

The tour appeared to be really great, and we walked through downtown and Chinatown, down to Fisherman's Wharf, which is a very nice tourist spot ,with lots of shops, restaurants and a great view of Alcatraz. Walking downtown was great. In the Netherlands we're not used to these kinds of extremely big buildings. There weren't any people working because of the holidays and we only saw some tourists photographing the high buildings.
Chinatown looked really Chinese, but we didn't feel very comfortable walking there. It was not due to anything happening, but it was just a feeling we had.

Linda wanted to buy some new jeans and she found a shop with cheap Levi's. When she was finished trying on all the different jeans, we looked for a nice place for lunch.
We saw a nice  Italian restaurant and ordered pizza. After that we walked further and watched the world famous cable cars at the start point, going up the hill to Powell Street.

Alcatraz and Cable Car, San Francisco

Since we wanted to visit famous Lombard Street (see photo below) we decided to walk up there instead of taking the cable car. Yes, I know what you think...stupid Dutchmen, that is exactly how we felt when we finished walking this big hill to Lombard Street. Next time we'll definitely take the cable car.

I really liked Lombard street. The street was busy and lots of cars took the road down, just for fun. We had to wait in line before we could take a nice photo, but it was worth waiting.

As we had been walking for a few hours, we all started to get tired, but we had to walk uphill for at least 45 minutes before we would reach the hotel.
Back in Powell street we decided to have an ice cream and something to eat in Mac Donald's. It was quite an unpleasant experience because the place was filled up with wanderers.
Back in the hotel we had some tea in the lobby before heading back to our room, and we all thought this was a very pleasant day.
