Day 18: San Francisco - San Luis Obispo

Getting back to LA, our final destination, would take us two days, so we planned to start driving quite early today. We drove from the hotel to the seaside of San Francisco and searched for the beginning of highway 1.

The first few hours went quite well. At some time we spotted something in the sea and stopped at a parking place to have a closer look. Some other cars stopped as well to take a better look. We saw some animals that looked like whales, and the other people thought they saw the same.

Erik wanted to try to zoom in with his new camera to take pictures of a bird or other animal for a few days now and finally he got his chance when we saw a big bird flying above the whales we were watching. The result was the photo you can see below.

After a while we drove on, soon after it started to rain. When we were close to Carmel, we saw signs saying the road would be closed in about 20miles, so we stopped to find another road on the map.
We found one that went through Carmel Valley, but it was only a small road.

At the nearest station we filled up the car and we decided to take that small road.
The valley looked quite nice, but a bit desolated and since it was still raining we didn’t enjoy the trip much. After 2 hours we reached the highway and it stopped raining.

At about 3 p.m. we arrived in San Luis Obispo and quickly found the hotel, which didn’t look too special. When we got to our room we were very disappointed, it was the worst room we had seen during this holiday.

Because we had to do the laundry, Linda and I started looking for a washer. We found an old one in the hotel, but they didn’t have any washing powder. This meant we had to go the shops a few miles down the road. Luckily we found a laundry store, so we drove back to get our laundry.
After an hour or so the laundry was done and we decided to have dinner in Denny’s and we all thought it was quite good.

I was glad when it was time to go to sleep. This day was one to forget quickly. We have another traveling day tomorrow before we arrive in LA to visit Hollywood and Universal Studios.
