Day 3: Anaheim - Lake Havasu

After a breakfast in Denny's we took highway 91 to Palm Springs. This was the first long drive with the rental car.
After a few minutes a police car came up behind and forced us to stop. We pulled over and the policeman got out of his car. He told us he forced us to stop because we didn't stay in our designated lane. He was right; we were checking out all the features on the car and didn't pay much attention to the road. Because we were tourists he let us go with just a warning. Back on the road we all started making fun of Erik's driving ability.

Palm Springs was not far from LA and we decided to check out the city. We heard a lot of celebrities have second houses in Palm Springs because of the warm weather. After driving a few blocks we decided we didn't want to live there, as there are so many old people. And Palm Springs is located in the middle of nowhere.
We stopped at a supermarket to buy drinks and food. Our next stop would be in the first national park of our trip: Joshua Tree National Monument.

We drove through the middle of nowhere to get there and after an hour or so we saw some signs to the park. After taking a right in Joshua Tree, a steep hill took us to the park. The weather suddenly became chilly after being quite nice. And on arrival at the park entrance it started to snow. Snow in the desert?

We paid the admission; we decided to take a Golden Eagle Pass ($50 for one car) which covers the entrance fee for all national parks during one year. If you are going to more than 5 national parks this pass will be cheaper.

We still couldn't believe it was snowing and we got out of the car to feel it ourselves. After a while we drove into the park. We were rather disappointed it was snowing so hard that we couldn't take a walk through the park. And taking photos would be difficult as well.

Yoshua Tree National Monument

We decided to drive slowly trough the park and headed for the exit in Twenty-nine Palms which is 37 miles from the entrance in Joshua Tree.
When we exited the park we turned right (road 62) and headed for Parker. This road goes right trough the desert.
We drove a few hours before we saw the Colorado River. When we crossed the bridge we turned left to Lake Havasu.

Lake Havasu City is located in the desert at the border of the Colorado River. It is well know as the site of the London Bridge. This genuine English bridge was built out of the real pieces of an English bridge a couple of years ago.
Staying in this city is ok just overnight, but I don't recommend it for a longer stay.
